Work on the Canal

This postcard of the Cristobal Coaling Station has cranes which resemble those used today to load modern container ships. The solution to each problem created opportunities for remarkable innovation and technological advances.

Osmund Osmundsen is at the left up on the rail car. The man to his right is Peter Halgren, who became his brother in law. This picture was taken at the Cristobal Coaling Station.

In this detail from the picture above you can see the pride and determination in the faces of my grandfather (left),Peter Halgren (to his right) and his men. David McCullough's book, "The Path Between the Seas," highlights the pride that all men felt. That they gave their very best to this huge project, is a result of the enlightened management of COL George W Goethals.
